NVIDIA several times a year produces video cards that claim to be the most powerful in the world. This time the company introduced TITAN V, which, according to the company, is 9 times more powerful than its predecessor. This fact makes it ideal for research and machine learning.
NVIDIA has found a new, profitable market that is not at the mercy of the ever-changing video game market. As it turned out, powerful graphics processors are well suited for computations required in mathematics and other exact sciences. Therefore it is not surprising that NVIDIA positions its latest video cards as the best tools for research and artificial intelligence.
The new TITAN V is ideal for this purpose. It is based on the latest NVIDIA Volta GPU platform, which was introduced in May last year. TITAN V boasts 110 teraflops of power, which is almost 10 times more than the TITAN X, which came before it. This in itself should make people think who needs huge computing power in a small box.
It’s not just about brute strength. TITAN V uses a combined L1 data cache and a shared memory block to minimize latency when moving data. It also has 12 GB of high-bandwidth memory (HBM2), designed for the next evolution of graphics memory.
All this power, of course, is worth a lot of money – TITAN V will be sold at $ 2999. NVIDIA will try to mitigate the unpleasant impression of such amount by free software for the new video card.
